 It is, indeed, the End of an Era. After 4 years Knit Ting is officially changing from a Thursday night to a Wednesday night as of September 2013. Same venue: Empress pub, same time: 8 onwards, and hopefully the same lovely knitters will attend every week as usual. See you there!

 It's so fabulous that the Willow Wanderer has managed to pull off this beautiful project on Jesus Green. I have admired yarn-bombers for a long time and never thought such a funky concept would come to old-fashioned Cambridge. The Willow Wanderer braved the chilly weather at 5am on a December morning, armed with a team of guerilla knitters and handfuls of cable-ties, she scaled the poles with squares of hand-crafted knitting donated by a variety of local crafters. I hope the results have cheered local residents and opened their eyes to the now ubiquitous and trendy craft! Who knows where the next yarn bomb will strike?
 The best thing about knitting is it just makes the chilly winter season so exciting! So while others are grumbling about the cold, I'm going to embrace it with my cashmerino cable-knit mittens! Bring it on, winter, I'm ready for you! Wahooo!
It's hard to believe it has taken me this long to realise the wonder of knitting garments without sleeves! I always start each new project with a sense of excitement which inevitably diminishes as I move from completing the back to the front; so by the time I reach a sleeve, I have usually started several other projects just because I'm fed up of it by then.
Not only are sleeveless tops quicker and more satisfying to knit, they are also therefore both cheaper and look pretty good too. Just look at James, the unfortunate would-be winner of the Great British Bake Off - he single-handedly raised the profile of Fairisle tank-tops after just a few episodes! We might have overdone Vintage in 2012 , what with the Jubilee an' all, but there's going to be a place in my wardrobe for the humble tanktop for As many of you know, part of the attraction of the Empress has been to see their 'miniature' pigs. Some people have begun to realise that they haven't been making appearances in the pub anymore. They are, in fact, being kept outside because they are no longer so miniature! As I had no idea that they would grow to monstrous proportions, I began to knit an outfit that might fit the smallest one. Sadly, I soon realised there would be no way any of these porkers would squeeze into my stripey design.
However, as we have just become proud new owners of a gorgeous little Boston Terrier, I realised to my delight that the jumper would fit him perfectly. Check out the homepage and Projects page to see him sporting it! I think it worked better putting him in when he was half asleep and on the sofa. I have since put him in it during the day and he looked utterly mortified! I have been a huge fan of the quirky, delicious and most welcoming of all restaurants, The Missing Sock for a few months now. In fact, I have been known to sing its praises to any poor unsuspecting listener that happens to be around.
You can imagine my surprise, then, when at a recent Knit 'Ting, who should walk through The Empress door, but the owner the Missing Sock. I don't know if they believed my splutterings about the fact that I had just been spreading a good word for them, but they seemed very interested in Knit 'Ting nonetheless. So much so, in fact, that we have been offered to take Knit 'Ting there and receive free tea and coffee! (Now anyone who has been before will know that it is impossible to have a tea there without also devouring one of the fabulous carrot and ginger cakes or gooey chocolate tortes that they have on offer.) So a cunning deal has been struck, where both sides win. We knit, chat, eat cake and get free hot drinks, while they may benefit from some new customers and maybe even a knitted missing sock or two! Let me know if you are interested and I will follow it up with Mr. Sock. (I did ask his name, but he enigmatically avoided the question and agreed that he'd rather not be Yes! Graffiti knitting is hitting Cambridge! Our first target has already been graffitied many times before so our beautiful woven addition is bound to improve it. Reality Checkpoint is the graffiti target. We hope to liven up this iconic monument on Parker's Piece with some jolly squares of knitting. Not only is it a great way to use up left over wool, but it's also a fun way to beautify the city with some positive and temporary decorations.
Maybe we should even label it with a 'Knit-ting' label? I have discovered a fantastic site with patterns that are not only free, but also beautiful, manageable, and even fashionable! I hardly thought it possible. So go and check out Vogue Knitting! It's a dream come true.
Although the free patterns are gorgeous, there is also the option to buy patterns for a reasonable amount and download them to your computer. Hurrah! I'm fed up of buying expensive books or leafing endlessly through boring/outdated patterns in shops, This is surely the future. Well, after much debating and farting about, we threw the Harry Hill doll idea out the window when we realised that 100s of Harry Hills had also been sent into the programme. Oops!
In the end, it was so hard to organise the group, we just went for a simple, but nonetheless effective option: a miniature family of hedgehogs. Have a look on our Projects page to see them. Gorgeous. Tune in to Harry Hill's TV burp this Saturday night to see the K-factor. ITV are running a competition for the best and possibly quirkiest knitted characters they can find. So it's up to us to find something exciting that we can make together and send a photo of by 4th March. I'm thinking Jedward? (Except we'll have to make 2 and that could take longer!)
